Glossary of Internet terms & phrases:

ADSL
High-speed broadband Internet, otherwise known as broadband.

Bandwidth
If you had a water pipe, you would talk about its capacity and its diameter; bandwidth means exactly the same but for an Internet connection.

Broadband
A term for high speed Internet access currently being offered by many ISPs.

Browser
A software programme to look at Web pages and other Internet resources. The most common browsers are Internet Explorer and Netscape.

Cookie
A cookie is a file that is left on your computer by a web site. The file contains information about your visit and information you might have left on the site, often containing your username and password.

Domain name
The name that points to a site on the Internet. The domain is everything after the www in the web address.

GIF
One of the 2 main formats for images on the web (the other being JPEG). Gifs are used for flatter graphics.

Firewall
If you use a network at work to access the Internet, your company may have a firewall blocking access to certain sites or file types. This reduces the threat from viruses and other unwanted downloads.

Flash
This has become one of the most popular ways to create moving graphical images on web sites. They are small and download quickly. The flashing bulb on this site is a flash image.

Hits
A hit is the number of files downloaded from a website server. It is often a misunderstood term - if one person visits a page that has 15 pictures on it then this will count as 16 hits. The best way to record traffic is the number of "unique users".

HTML
This stands for HyperText Markup Language and is the code behind a web page.

Hyperlink
This is a link on a web page that when clicked will jump you to another location on that page, another page or another web site.

ISP
An Internet Service Provider is an organisation that allows you to access the Internet.

JPEG
One of the 2 main formats for producing images on the web, the other being JPEG. They are used for photos and other more complex graphics.
